Diversity, Intercultural Encounters, and Education

This book examines how the challenges and tensions of migration and unbalanced north-south and east-west relations impact on multicultural societies and cultural diversity. The authors also explore diversity and identity, intercultural encounters and conflict and the interrogations of a new socio-political order.


Three-year project addressing the challenges the crisis of multiculturalism brought to the EU and the lack of a common EU intellectual framework to address the issue. The project was divided in five main research phases: First there was the outline of migration in the nine partner countries. Second, the critical review of public debates on integration and multiculturalism.

Three-year project aiming at studying how ethnic differences impact on prospects for minority ethnic youth and their peers in urban settings. Exploring educations practices in nine countries, this project’s goal was to uncover measures of protection from marginalisation and social exclusion directed at minority ethnic youth.

Two-year project examining the transmission of religious beliefs and values in both primary education and family settings in different EU countries. The choice of school depending on religious denomination was also taken into consideration.

March 2006 - March 2009 - research

REDCo - Religion in Education

Three-year project with an interest in the contribution of religions and values to dialogue and tensions in Europe. A multidisciplinary research team examined how intercultural dialogue, understanding and mutual respect could be achieved among European citizens of different religious, cultural and political backgrounds in educational institutions.

Network on Intercultural Learning in Europe (NILE)

This 3-year intercultural project involved adult education organisations which gathered to discuss intercultural learning in the face of migration and lifelong learning in Europe. In the context of rising racism in Europe, this project tried to link pedagogical approaches from intercultural learning to processes of globalization and migration. The project sought to determine terminology and approaches on intercultural issues.
